Qualify Your Windows All vinyl and wood windows and doors must meet the same minimum industry standards for material strength, water tightness, air tightness, U-value and R-value among others. This does not mean that all windows will have the same performance and service life in the real world. The # 1 cause of consumer dissatisfaction with any product is poor engineering and component quality. The # 2 cause of consumer dissatisfaction is improper or poor installation of a product. Engineering and design have a direct relationship to the construction, operation, efficiency, performance, cosmetic appeal, service life and ultimately the long term satisfaction and enjoyment that you will get from your windows. Be sure that the manufacturer of the window product you choose controls the engineering, design and manufacture of your windows from drawing board to delivery. Great Lakes Window, Andersen Window and Marvin Window companies are just such companies. Andersen ranks #1, Nortec/Great Lakes ranks # 5 and Marvin Window ranks # 7 in the industries top 100 window manufacturers in North America. Most manufacturers rely entirely on off the shelf components, which are then assembled in their facility. It’s not really their window it’s just somebody else’s with their private label on it. This being true the manufacturer has very little or no voice in the engineering and evolution of the product. The product therefore suffers severely because it doe’s not stay in step with new advancements in the window industry. The result to the consumer is that engineering flaws and deficiencies have a habit of hanging on and not getting resolved. Some manufacturers knowingly choose to produce a product that is less than ideal, using inferior technologies, components and manufacturing. The justification is that they can continue to produce a product that will compete in the market place and on the bottom line but at the cost of reliability, performance, service life, and advances in technology. |
